Manual therapy vs Massage therapy

Massage therapy includes a series of therapeutic techniques aimed at manipulation of the body’s soft tissues for the purpose of relaxation and relief of muscle tension whereas manual therapy goes beyond the soft tissue with a focus on the musculoskeletal and nervous system.

Is massage therapy covered by insurance?

Manual therapy performed by a physical therapist, physical therapy assistant, occupational therapist, or occupational therapy assistant is covered by most insurance plans. However, massage therapy performed by a licensed massage therapist for the purpose of relaxation and muscle tension without a comprehensive therapy plan of care is not covered by insurance.
